Beautifying the butterfly garden
June 23, 2022 at 7:19 a.m.
Avid gardener Aarya Ghosh of North Ridge Street, a third grader at Ridge Street Elementary School, carefully pats the dirt around a tiny plant she put in the butterfly garden on the island in front of Rye Brook Village Hall during the Rye Brook Sustainability Committee’s planting day on Saturday, June 11. Under the direction of Committee Chair Brigitte Dix, the garden was weeded, native plants including dwarf Joe Pye, butterfly weed, lantanas, rose mallow, phlox, echinacea and milkweed were put in the ground and a light layer of mulch was added.
Jinju Prince and Emily Davis, both sophomores on the board of the Blind Brook High School Roots and Shoots Club, spread mulch around the new plantings in the butterfly garden.
Rye Brook Department of Public Works employee Peter DeVito thoroughly soaks the garden to provide the sustenance the new plantings need to grow.
The native plantings in the garden are designed to attract butterflies. Filler and color were added to beautify the patch, which was originally planted last year.
Sophomore Keira Curran, on the board of the Blind Brook High School Roots and Shoots Club, adds mulch to the Village of Rye Brook butterfly garden.
