Whether they walk, bike or run, kids travel to school under the sun
October 20, 2022 at 6:50 a.m.
Gianni Patafio holds the hand of his grandfather Greg Woods as the two point out scenery while strolling to Gianni’s first-grade class at King Street Elementary School the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 12 for International Walk to School Day.
Walk to School Day doesn’t just feature students and their families getting to school by foot—some, like fifth-grader Nicholas Allmashy, rode bikes. The event advocates for safe pedestrian paths in the community.
First-grader Annabelle Damle walks with her father Ajay and their dog Remy to King Street Elementary School for another day of classes.
Mila Cammarano, a kindergartener, poses on the front of a Port Chester Fire Department truck from the Harry Howard Hook & Ladder Company.
King Street Elementary School’s mascot, Roary the Lion, sits on a Port Chester Police Department motorcycle, which was brought to the event for photo opportunities and so officers could educate students about police work.
Anthony Travaglini, a technology and enrichment teacher at King Street Elementary School, leads a parade around the parking lot with his students.
Fourth-grader Emma Weinstein high-fives Marissa Torento-Butkiewicz, a school parent and a local Girl Scout troop leader, as Weinstein parades around the parking lot with her classmates.
Second-grader David Zhagui holds his father Manuel’s hand as both finish marching around the school’s parking lot with David’s peers.
Amanda Mercaldi walks her daughter Cora to her kindergarten class at King Street Elementary School. The Hawley Avenue residents cross King Street on their way.
Parents and students walk down King Street to King Street Elementary School for the annual Walk to School Day event. Many of the parents carry their children’s backpacks.
Chase Krzeminski, son of recently promoted Port Chester Police Lieutenant Christopher Krzeminski, sits on a department motorcycle as Police Officer David Arroyo watches him. The 4-year-old isn’t old enough to be a student at King Street Elementary School, but he’ll attend in the future.
King Street Elementary School parent Jody Helmle watches the parade of students who walk through the parking lot for Walk to School Day. Her fifth-grade son Evan is one of those in the crowd.
Students in Lissette Hernandez’s special education class pose for a picture in front of the Port Chester Police Department’s motorcycle, manned by Officer David Arroyo (back left).
King Street Elementary School Assistant Principal Anthony Carolini (left) and Principal Sam Ortiz stand with the school’s mascot, Roary the Lion, after another successful Walk to School Day.
