Suds and soccer under the sun
September 22, 2022 at 4:36 a.m.
Blind Brook boys’ varsity soccer junior midfielder Martin Otero (right) and senior co-captain Nico Gonzalez, also a midfielder, scrub the hood of a car during the team’s car wash fundraiser in the Blind Brook Middle/High School parking lot on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Gary Karetsky, the father of Blind Brook boys’ soccer captain and defenseman Daniel, directs traffic heading to the car wash in the parking lot of Blind Brook Middle/High School. Washes were $15 for cars and $20 for “oversized vehicles.
Members of the Blind Brook boys’ soccer team pose for a group photo between car washes. Sloane Berman, the younger sister of junior midfielder Michael (front, crouched) helped the Trojans for a while. The $3,200 raised from the fundraiser is going to the Don Bosco Community Center, Abilis and Coffee for Good, all based in either Port Chester or Greenwich, Conn.
Hose in hand, junior midfielder Hudson McRedmond sprays cars as they pass him in the line, rinsing them off before they move on to the drying section.
Who said washing cars has to be all work and no play? Certainly not the Trojans, who throw sponges at the cars they wash—and at each other.
Dusan Cuk, father of sophomore goalie Luka, hangs rags and cloths out to dry on a school bus for later use in the wash line. The Maplewood Lane resident helped the boys during Saturday’s event.
Team co-captain Jack Sassower, a senior defenseman, hugs fellow co-captain and senior midfielder Nico Gonzalez, covering him in suds in the process.
Blind Brook boys’ soccer junior midfielder Martin Otero juggles a soccer ball while his teammates wash a car behind him.
Senior midfielder Bryce Oling gives his father Scott a soapy hug as the team prepares to close down their event. He makes sure to squeeze the suds from both sponges he holds onto his father’s face and shoulders.
Getting covered in soapy water after washing cars for hours warrants a hose shower for Danny Wilk, a sophomore left wing. Senior midfielder Bryce Oling watches, waiting for his turn to get sprayed.
Midfielders Nico Gonzalez (left) and Michael Berman wash the hood of a car. The senior carries sponges while the junior wields a hose.
Luka Cuk, a sophomore goalie for the Blind Brook boys’ soccer team, washes the hood of an SUV he and other teammates—including senior goalie Jack Bachmann (right)—drew soapy hearts on. Beyond washing cars and raising funds for charity, the car wash was about community and team bonding.
Junior midfielder Eli Zimmerman washes the hood of an SUV with a sponge, while sophomore goalie Luka Cuk bends down to replenish the water in his own sponge. Behind them, Dylan McRedmond, a sophomore midfielder, hoses down another SUV, and moms direct their boys as they work the line.
Equipped with multiple cloths, sophomore midfielder Henrique Almedia dries an SUV. Behind him, Holly Karetsky, mother of senior defenseman and captain Daniel, hoses down the tires of another SUV. Holly helped organize the event.
Cupcakes, brownies and cookies sit in the back of an SUV, ready to feed a team of hungry Blind Brook boys’ soccer players after they finish washing cars. The treats were made by one of the boy’s moms.
The Blind Brook boys’ varsity soccer team swarms a car that paid for a wash at their Saturday event. When people they knew entered the line with their cars, the boys would often sit on the hoods, play catch with sponges over the roof or draw shapes on the windows with suds.
Taking a break to practice their skills, junior midfielder Michael Berman heads a soccer ball in a small game he plays with sophomore goalie Luka Cuk (left) and junior midfielder Ethan Leland (right).
Hoses may be great for washing cars, but they’re even better for spraying teammates. Sophomore midfielder Dylan McRedmond wields his wet weapon as junior midfielder Martin Otero walks behind him. Bryce Oling, a senior midfielder, holds two soaked sponges, ready to throw them at a teammate.
