The Blind Brook volleyball team is looking to have a repeat of last year, and things are looking up for them so far as they have completed the regular season and won the first round of the playoffs.
After successfully winning the section title last year for the first time in school history, the team is still looking to do it again even after three seniors that were a part of the win last year are not there anymore. The team may not have the same record as last year, but they are still making quite a splash in the section with their record going into the playoffs being 13 wins and only five losses the whole season. They wrapped up last week with their final three regular season games before starting playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 26.
The team took on Dobbs Ferry on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and prevailed with a convincing 3-0 win. The scores of the sets where 26-24, 25-19 and 25-19. The Blind Brook volleyball team looked dominant on the court against a strong team that went on to be seated second in the whole section which bodes well for them going into playoffs. Oriah Rosenfeld had nine kills and 13 digs, Ella Rosenfeld had five kills and five blocks, Zaara Suhail had two kills, Maria Leyva Pereyra had eight digs, Georgina Haas had three kills and eight digs. Overall, the team racked up 19 aces.
There next game was two days later on Thursday, Oct. 19 the team against Valhalla. Going into this game, the ladies knew they needed to work together as a team after their tough 1-3 loss to Valhalla exactly a month earlier. These girls showed all the work they had put in since that day when they came out on top with a 3-1 win even after going down in the first set 19-25. For the next sets they came out strong winning three back-to-back contests 25-16, 25-11 and 25-16.
Fernanda Julian had 28 assists, Oriah Rosenfeld 12 kills and 14 aces, Ella Rosenfeld had 15 kills and seven blocks, Sophia Carey had seven digs and Leyva Pereyra had five digs and two aces. This performance showed the Lady Trojans’ growth after losing to the Vikings a month before. They were able to come back and secure an important league win.
Only one day later the Lady Trojans were able to rally again for their final season game. They played Pawling on Friday, Oct. 20 and won a fourth straight game that week. The final score was 3-0 with the set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-13. Julian had 29 assists, Oriah Rosenfeld had 14 kills and two blocks, Ella Rosenfeld had 14 kills and two blocks, Haas had three kills and Carey had 11 digs. The Lady Trojans were riding high after their successful week capturing four straight wins (including the Sleepy Hollow victory on Monday mentioned in a previous article) going into their first playoff matchup.
The team then had a well-deserved 10-day break after securing the third seed and a bye in the first week game of the playoffs. They used this time to practice and rest up for their matchup against the winner of the Irvington vs. Hastings game in which Irvington won. This team has proven that practice shows great results because the season started off rocky when they lost a few important league games, but they bounced back stronger with several defeats of teams they had lost to in previous weeks of the season. In playoffs just one loss will end the season, so the stakes are high going into every game and the more support the team has the better.
They played their first playoff game on Monday, Oct. 30 at home against Irvington. This was a whiteout game for the fans, so they showed up in white to show their support for the team. There were no signs of weakness during any of the sets and the Lady Trojans were dominant throughout the game, winning the sets 25-19, 25-14 and 25-12. Oriah Rosenfeld had 16 kills and 12 digs, Ella Rosenfeld had 10 kills and 11 digs, Madeline Hirsch had three blocks and Julian had 26 assists.
They play next against Dobbs Ferry again after press time on Thursday, Nov. 1, but this time they will be away for the playoff game. If the team goes on to beat Dobbs Ferry again, they will play in the finals at Mahopac High School on Saturday, Nov. 4 against the winner of Pleasantville and Putnam Valley who also play on Nov. 1.
