ConEd billing snafu affects 100,000 ‘autopay’ accounts

If you pay your Con Edison monthly gas and electric bill by having it automatically deducted from your bank account, the so-called “autopay” system, you’re owed money big time by ConEd—but only if you claim it.
A ConEd representative confirmed to the Westmore News Nov. 6 that at least 100,000 customers were promised a refund due to overcharging caused by a billing cycle changeover to new software but that only customers who called in to make a complaint would find out how to file a claim.
If you are one of those customers, you must call ConEd at 1-800-752-6633 and work your way through the voice recognition/artificial intelligence system to get to a representative. At every possible opportunity say “agent” when asked by the AI software why you’re calling.
Once you have a “live” agent, identify yourself by your account number and tell the agent what the ConEd statement said you are owed.
The agent will give you a case number and an e-mail address to state your case. Attach to the e-mail both a copy of your bill and a copy of your bank statement showing you were charged an amount other than what the bill promised.
The agent said at some point the ConEd “Payment Corrections Department” (their name for it) will credit your account, but it’s not yet clear whether that credit will be in a forthcoming bill or whether ConEd will make a refund directly to your bank account.
