B.B. volleyball season winds down with wins and 2 player milestones
October 18, 2023 at 9:58 p.m.
The Lady Trojans volleyball team has spent the past couple of weeks trying to put themselves in the same post-season position they were in last year.
This intense end to the season has a lot of bearing on the Blind Brook volleyball team’s standing going into sectionals. The more wins they get, the higher they will be placed. Typically, the higher seeded teams have easier schedules by playing against teams that may have barely made sectionals to begin with. They are currently seeded in 4th place which is considered a good seed going into the post-season. Their current record is 10-5 which is strong but not as strong as they were last year when they were seeded in second.
The team played Briarcliff on Thursday, Oct. 5 succeeding their homecoming week. They finished the game with a shutout win 3-0. The set scores were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22. The highlights at the end of the game were Oriah Rosenfeld with 15 kills, Ella Rosenfeld with six kills, Zaara Suhail with three kills, Fernanda Julian with 19 assists and 12 digs, Sophia Carey with seven digs and Maria Leyva Pereyra with six digs.
Their next game was against Rye Neck to whom they had lost on Sept. 22 in a 0-3 game. They came out ready to compete for the win this time and they were successful. They upset the Panthers in a close game with a final score of 3-2. The scores of the sets were 25-7, 25-20, 22-25, 18-25 and ended with a 15-10 win in the last set. There were a lot of impressive numbers from the game because of its atypical extended length. Most of the games Blind Brook has played have not gone into a fifth set.
Ella Rosenfeld had 19 kills, eight blocks and 15 digs, Oriah Rosenfeld had 16 kills and 20 digs, Fernanda Julian had 35 assists, Maria Leyva Pereyra had 11 digs, Sophia Carey had eight digs, Georgina Haas had five kills and five digs and Madeline Hirsch had four kills and two blocks.
Their next game was against the Westlake Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 13. They played a quick 3-0 game. The set scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-23. Ella Rosenfeld had 12 kills, two blocks and eight digs, Oriah Rosenfeld had 12 kills, two blocks and eight digs, Madeline Hirsch had two kills and three blocks and Fernanda Julian had 19 assists.
This game preceded a big weekend and Monday of milestones for two members of the team, Oriah Rosenfeld and Fernanda Julian.

They competed in a Pelham tournament on Saturday, Oct. 14. During this tournament they started with pool play where they competed against many different teams. The Lady Trojans went undefeated in pool play. They were then seeded number one in the gold bracket. They won their quarterfinal match against Rye but fell short in the semifinal game versus Pelham with a score of 26-24.
During this tournament Oriah Rosenfeld achieved the milestone of 500 kills over her career totaling 29 for the day. Julian had 56 assists, Ella Rosenfeld had 23 kills, Maria Leyva Pereyra had 30 digs for the day and Sophia Carey had 28 digs. At the end of this tournament, Ella Rosenfeld received All-Tournament team honors and Fernanda Julian’s career assists totaled 999. This meant that in her next game she would cross the 1,000th assist milestone. That was against Sleepy Hollow on Monday, Oct. 16.
The final score of the Sleepy Hollow game was 3-1 with the scores of each set being 28-18, 24-26, 25-17, and 25-15. During this game, Julian did in fact reach the 1,000th assist mark and the Lady Trojans celebrated as well Oriah Rosenfeld‘s 500-kill milestone. The accomplishments of the game were that Oriah Rosenfeld had 17 kills, Ella Rosenfeld had 10 kills, Madeline Hirsch had five kills and two blocks and Georgina Haas had five aces.
“I never could’ve done it without my amazing coaches and teammates,” said Julian in reference to her 1,000th assist milestone. “I am so incredibly grateful for all the time my coaches have spent working with me to help me reach this moment.”
The team finished these past few weeks undefeated in the four games they played which gives a glimpse into what the end of their season holds. The season, however, is not over. The Lady Trojans have two more games before Oct. 20. A few days after that the official sectionals brackets will be released, and the postseason will begin. Nothing is set in stone until the final games are played, and Blind Brook has the possibility of moving up or down from here.
