After practicing for a couple weeks, the Blind Brook girls’ basketball team was ready to play their first game as a team. Since most of them are returning players, the team chemistry was there from the start. In their first tournament at Brewster High School, they were ready to showcase the skills they had been waiting to display.
In their first tournament game on Thursday, Dec. 12, they took on Brewster on their home court and beat them 62-43. The starting five in this game were Skylar Sommers, Kendall Konigsberg, Bella Montesano, Oriah Rosenfeld and Ella Rosenfeld. Konigsberg had 22 points, Oriah Rosenfeld scored 24 points, Sommers had six points, Avery Smith had three points, Montesano had two points, and Ella Rosenfeld scored three points. On an already small roster, Blind Brook was missing a few players in this game due to sickness and was hoping to have them back for the next one.
Their opponent in the next game of the tournament on Friday, Dec. 13 was Pelham High School. Blind Brook lost this game 66-47 despite having some of their players back. They had the same starting five as in the previous game hoping they would have the same result. Konigsberg scored over half of the team's points, a total of 24, in the game. Oriah and Ella Rosenfeld had eight points each, and Montesano scored three points.
The Lady Trojans were hoping for an overall better result in these two games, but both Brewster and Pelham are not in the same league or class as Blind Brook, so they likely won't be competing against them again later in the season. Blind Brook is in Class B whereas Pelham and Brewster are larger schools, so they are in Class A and Class AA respectively.
This was a challenging introductory tournament to get everyone acclimated to the environment and kick off the winter season. In addition to this tournament, junior captain Kendall Konigsberg was nominated for Lohud Player of the Week to commemorate not only her performance with an average of 23 points and a total of seven rebounds and three blocks in the first two games but more importantly her 1,000th career point on the Blind Brook girls’ varsity basketball team.
The Lady Trojans’ first home game won’t be until after the holiday break on Tuesday, Jan. 7 versus Dobbs Ferry at 4:45 p.m. Before that they will play Woodlands away on Friday, Jan. 3 at 4:30 p.m.
