While responding to reports of smoke on the sixth floor of the senior citizens apartment building at 167 Terrace Ave. on Sunday, Feb. 25, Port Chester Fire Department volunteers were notified of a fire raging on the second floor of the same Port Chester Housing Authority building.
Assistant Chiefs John Storino and Nicholas Melillo were first on scene, along with Tower Ladder and Rescue 40 at 6:00 p.m. Firefighters forcibly gained entry to the affected apartment to begin searches.
One resident of the apartment was ultimately hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation.
According to a press release from the American Red Cross, the organization’s Metro New York North chapter responded by aiding three residents from two households following the fire. Caseworkers will work with families to guide them towards additional resources for long-term recovery needs.
The department reported they were able to get control of the fire in under an hour, with assistance from firefighters from Rye Brook, the City of Rye, Purchase, the Town of Mamaroneck and Tarrytown.
As Port Chester firefighters battled the blaze, the village was covered by units from the Village of Mamaroneck, Harrison and West Harrison. They responded to a fire alarm in Rye Brook and a dryer fire in a laundromat on Willett Avenue.
