The 4-11 Blind Brook Trojans entered a 4-game week following a win against Westlake before losing to Pleasantville. The Trojans, despite the rough season thus far, were a few wins away from clinching a playoff berth. The five remaining baseball games were crucial for the team, as the playoff season was right around the corner.
On Monday, May 6, the Trojans traveled to Pawling High School. Starting with Zach Schneider on the mound, Blind Brook was confident as they looked to open the busiest, yet most important week of their season. Schneider took the Trojans through four innings, followed by Robbie Cuesta. Cuesta had one of his best pitching outings yet, and Pawling scored six runs in total. The bats of Blind Brook were awake on this day, as Andrew Rogovic, Zach Schneider, Robbie Cuesta, and Asher Toll all recorded two hits. Nine runs were scored by the Trojans as they picked up a win in Pawling by a 9-6 score.
The next day the Trojans hosted the Pleasantville Panthers at Rec Field. Their confidence was through the roof, as Rogovic was back on the mound to start. He took the Trojans through four innings, striking out 11 and giving up no runs before being taken out due to a blister on his throwing hand. Rogovic has battled this blister all season, and after four innings he was not able to throw through it. Luckily for Blind Brook, sophomore Asher Toll was relieving, and he took the Trojans through the remaining two innings, letting up no runs. The shutdown pitching took the pressure off the Trojans, who only needed one run to win.
Rogovic, Daniel Glantz, Toll and Jack Pastor all recorded hits, but it was the bat of Schneider that came through to knock in the winning run on a walk-off. The intense showdown between the Trojans and Panthers ended in a 1-0 win for Blind Brook to give them their second straight victory. More importantly, this win gifted Blind Brook a ticket to the playoffs. Despite a rough and unusual season with a makeshift field, injuries, and tons of rain, the Trojans were able to pull through and clinch a spot in the playoffs.
The Trojans were back at it the next day (5/8) against Westlake. Cuesta started on the mound, taking the Trojans through two innings, only letting up one run. Elliot Zwicker took Blind Brook the rest of the way, and Westlake put up five runs between Zwicker and Cuesta. The Trojans’ bats were active again, as Rogovic went 2 for 4, with additional hits from Schneider, Glantz, Nick Violino and Matthew Ebenstein. The four runs the Trojans scored were not enough to keep up with Westlake, and Blind Brook fell by one. The final score was 5-4.
On Thursday, May 9, the exhausted Trojans had their last game of the week and second to last game of the regular season. They were competing against a strong Horace Greeley team, and again it was the freshman duo on the mound, starting with Glantz and ending with Alex Schneider. Eleven runs were scored between the two, and to make matters worse, the Trojans only put one run on the board. Two hits from Rogovic and one from Zach Schneider were all the Trojans were able to muster. The fatigue and exhaustion from having four consecutive games got to the team, and they fell by an 11-1 score.
Lastly, on Monday, May 13, the 6-13 Blind Brook Trojans traveled to Hastings for the final game of the regular season. Despite a 4-0 lead and near home runs from Rogovic and Toll, the Trojans fell by one run in extra innings. The 5-4 final score closed out the regular season for the Trojans.
The first round of the playoffs will be played on Saturday, May 18, with Blind Brook’s opponent still to be decided as of press time Wednesday. However, it was almost certain #11 Blind Brook would play #6 Dobbs Ferry at a site and time to be determined.
