The Blind Brook varsity volleyball team is on a tear, looking to make history with a state title.
After winning the Section 1 Class B title, the Blind Brook had one week between the section final game and their regional final game. The Trojans beat Valhalla, the only team they had lost to during the regular season, for the sectional title. After long days of practice, they were able to beat Valhalla 3-0 in the Section 1 Class B finals and secure their place in regionals. They obtained a place in the regional finals, not having to play in the semifinals. If they were to win the regional final game, they would move on to the state semifinals, and then if they were to win that game, they would play for the Class B state title.
The regional final took place on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Yorktown High School. The Trojans played against the winner of the regional semifinals, who were from Section 2, New York’s capital region. They played Ichabod Crane who traveled a long distance for this game and were going to do everything they could to make sure they didn’t have to drive the hour and a half home with a loss.
The game was extremely tight and went to five sets, but it ultimately ended with a 3-2 score in Blind Brook’s favor.
The scores of the sets were 22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 19-25, 15-8. Fernanda Julian had 45 assists and five aces, Ella Rosenfeld had 19 kills, five aces, four blocks and 13 digs, Oriah Rosenfeld had 22 kills and 20 digs, Tanisha Venkatapur had five kills, Madeline Hirsch had four blocks, Maria Leyva had 10 digs, and Georgianna Haas had eight digs.
With only one game between the Trojans and a chance at the state championship, Blind Brook is looking to continue and make history for the third time this season. After taking their second sectional title in Class B and now holding the regional title for Class B, they’re looking to sweep the entire class by earning the state title as well.
Their next game will be played at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls against Windsor High School from Section 4. This venue typically hosts many sporting events and concerts in the Adirondack area and this coming weekend will hold the New York State Volleyball Championship. It is about a three-hour drive away. This game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8 a.m. as the first in a round robin against other top teams in the state. The top two teams will move on to play at Cool Insuring Arena the next day, Sunday, Nov. 24, at 11:30 a.m. for the state championship.
