The Blind Brook Trojans volleyball team has so much to be proud of this season, yet there is still so much time left. In the regular season of games, they have played 14 games with a record of 13-1 in those games so far. Their only loss of the season thus far was to the strong Valhalla team who has been a strong competitor for many years. Valhalla is a league game which means the Trojans will play them twice during the season. Their second matchup where they will be traveling to Valhalla is coming up, and there is a lot of anticipation about this game and whether the Trojans will be able to win it. With Blind Brook having lost to the Vikings once, it is crucial they respond after Valhalla beat them at their homecoming game. If they are unable to win this game, they have to worry going into sectionals they will end up playing Valhalla and losing to them in the postseason.
However, in the past week they played Oct. 7 and Oct. 9, and these games were both wins for the book.
On Monday, Oct. 7, they faced off against Pleasantville, another team from their league, securing a dominant 3-0 victory. The set scores were 25-10, 25-19, and 25-18, showcasing their strong performance. Fernanda Julian led the team with an impressive 26 assists, while Ella Rosenfeld delivered 11 kills. Oriah Rosenfeld added to the offensive attack with nine kills, and Tanisha Venkatapur contributed another four crucial kills. Their teamwork and precision were evident throughout, solidifying their reputation as one of the top teams in the league with not only some of the best players but some of the best cohesion as well.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9 they played Briarcliff in another league game. This was their second time playing the Bears this season. They had beat them 3-0 on Sept. 25 and wanted to make sure this game went the same way. Thanks to their skill and ability as a team, they were able to pull out the result they wanted with the game ending 3-1. The scores of the sets were 25-16, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-9. Julian had 27 assists to players Oriah Rosenfeld who had 17 kills and 11 digs, Tanisha Venkatapur had six kills, Annabel Rosenfeld had five kills, and Georgianna Haas had an additional four kills and 11 digs.
Blind Brook won a tough 3-2 match against Byram Hills at home on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The scores of the sets were 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-10. It was the longest game Blind Brook has played all season, but they were able to fight through and get the win. After the teams’ tie in two sets, they played a fifth set, but this one was only played to 15 points, so it was shorter than the others.
Julian had 40 assists and 10 digs, Ella Rosenfeld had 19 kills and five blocks, Maria Leyva-Pereyra had 12 digs, Oriah Rosenfeld had 16 assists, Venkatapur had five kills, Haas had 15 digs and Sasha Jhangimal had five digs.
Byram Hills was a Class A competitor they were playing against, so they knew it was going to be a tough game. They were the second place seed in the entire class with a record of 12-1. They lost one game the entire season just like the Blind Brook team. However, they were expected to be better due to the higher class they are in, but Blind Brook proved that stereotype wrong by beating them.
Looking towards playoffs, there are some things to keep in mind. To calculate who qualifies for the Section 1 playoffs, each team accumulates points from every game on their schedule and the highest will move on. Each win is worth four points, while ties earn two points. The Blind Brook volleyball team has 48 total points as of now. Additionally, teams can receive bonus points based on the overall winning percentage of their Section 1 opponents: one bonus point for opponents with a winning percentage between .500 and .749, and two points for opponents with a percentage of .750 or higher. This system rewards both individual performance and the strength of competition. The Blind Brook team has four bonus points from the season. They will definitely make the playoffs, but Dobbs Ferry has taken over the number one position in the class.
After Tuesday’s contest, they had four more games to go in the regular season, all against league opponents. The first was played on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Valhalla followed by an away game versus Westlake on Monday, Oct. 21 and two home games, the first on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against Pleasantville and the last on Thursday, Oct. 24 against Rye Neck. All contests start at 4:30 p.m.
