The regular season volleyball games come to an end for Section 1, concluding for Blind Brook on Thursday, Oct. 24. After only their second loss of the season last week to Valhalla, their record changed, and even though they beat Westlake just a couple days later, they fell to second place in Class B. Despite their performance last week, they lost their top spot to Valhalla and the only thing that could have prevented that was if Valhalla had lost a game at the end of the season which they did not. Since both teams ended with the same record, the tiebreaker was the number of bonus points each team accumulated which came from the wins they secured against the top five teams based on their rankings.
The Lady Trojans’ second to last game of the regular season was at home against Pleasantville on Wednesday, Oct. 23. It was only played to three sets because the Blind Brook team played strong, not letting Pleasantville get more than 15 points in any set. The scores were 25-14, 25-13, and 25-15. Junior Ella Rosenfeld had six digs, 14 kills and seven aces. Eighth-grader Annabel Rosenfeld had five kills and five aces. Senior Fernanda Julian had 23 assists, seven aces, and six digs. Junior Tanisha Venkatapur had four kills and four aces and senior Maria Gracia Leyva-Pereyra had four digs.
Their last game, also played at home on Thursday, Oct. 24, was much closer than Blind Brook wanted it to be with a final score of 3-2. Blind Brook was able to secure the win against Rye Neck, but they faced an unusual challenge playing extra points on top of the extra sets they played. The scores of the sets were 9-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25–19 and 15-13. Julian had 34 assists, Ella Rosenfeld had 22 kills and four blocks, Venkatapur had 10 kills and Annabel Rosenfeld had 13 kills.
This past week Blind Brook also climbed into the state rankings for Class B. This is a hard feat to accomplish, but the Blind Brook team did it and is still fighting to get back to their third section final in a row. At the end of the regular season the Lady Trojans finished second to Valhalla because they ended the season with the same record, but Valhalla had two more bonus points. Despite not being first in Class B, there is no true impact on Blind Brook because they will not see Valhalla again until the finals, assuming they both get there. They will be set on opposite sides of the bracket so both teams will be at home in the quarterfinals and semifinals due to their higher seeding. The finals are always played at a neutral location.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the sectionals because of their seeding, Blind Brook will play their first sectional game against the winner of the Westlake vs Hastings game on Saturday, Nov. 2 at home starting at 1 p.m.
