As 2024 fall sports are starting up this year, many are wondering what 2024 will bring for the Blind Brook girls’ varsity volleyball team after their thrilling season last year. They finished the 2023 season with a convincing 15-6 record including making it to another section final game after their first ever section title against Albertus Magnus in 2022.

The Trojans’ sectional final game last year took place at Mahopac High School against Putnam Valley on Nov. 4. Many students from the school, including members of other fall sports teams whose seasons had already ended, came out to support the team. They put up a strong fight, with parents and students cheering them on, even when they were trailing. Unfortunately, they lost to the Tigers 3-1, which brought their season to an end.

In addition, a few players received awards for their part in making this team a success. The girls who received honors were: All-Conference: Ella Rosenfeld and All-Section: Fernanda Julian and Oriah Rosenfeld. These awards, though, do not give credit to the rest of the team who also played a major role in the Trojans’ success like current sophomore Georgina Haas, senior Madeline Hirsch, senior Maria Leyva Pereyra and all the seniors who have now graduated.

This team lost last year’s seniors Zaara and Zoeya Suhail and Sophia Carey from the roster. The team and the coach are looking for players to fill the shoes of these girls to help them have another successful season.

Coach Gina Carlone stated at the end of last season, “It was not the outcome we wanted, but losing is a part of sports. Next year will be the year; we have a young team that will be hungry for more. As I tell all my players, keep playing.” These girls are using that finals loss as motivation for this upcoming season where they will find themselves matching up against some of the same teams that have beat them in the past.

The girls have been in preseason since Aug. 26, and they have spent four to five hours a day training to be not only the top of the league this year but also the top of the section. With seniors Fernanda Julian, Madeline Hirsch and Maria Leyva Pereyra leading the team, these three are looking to end their high school careers with another section title.

The Trojans’ season begins with a tournament away on Saturday, Sept. 7 against Hendrick Hudson at 8:30 a.m. followed by their home opener on Monday, Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m. against league opponent Westlake. They have two more games on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at North Salem and Friday, Sept. 13 at home against Croton-Harmon, also at 4:30 p.m., and they are looking to finish their first couple of weeks with a slew of victories.
