A Port Chester police officer was dispatched to the Stop & Shop at 25 Waterfront Pl. after receiving a call of a shoplifter on Monday, Sept. 16.
The loss prevention specialist who made the call followed the suspect down the street after seeing him leave through the pharmacy exit without paying for an 18-pack of beer, according to the police report. They provided officers with a description of the man at 2:16 p.m. After leaving, he dropped the beer, which was recovered by the employee as he fled the scene.
While searching Don Bosco Place, officers spotted Javier Vasquez Martinez, who allegedly fit the bill and was known to them through previous encounters. Officers detained the 41-year-old until the employee was brought to the scene and confirmed him as the alleged thief.
The 142 Pearl St. resident was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
