Geophysical specialists Fiona Jones (left) and Cole Peterson operate a ground penetrating radar machine at the African American Cemetery in Rye on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The survey is part of a larger project to accurately map out the plot, both above ground and beneath it, in an effort to preserve the history of the those buried there and find potential unmarked graves.

Cemeteries are arguably one of the best places to be on Halloween, but when Rye Town officials and affiliates visited one on the holiday it wasn’t for the thrill of scares but for the sake of history.
